The Police in Kabale are investigating circumstances under which a house help suffocated
an eight-month-old baby girl in Kekubo cell, Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.

Sylvia Kyarikunda, 18, was arrested on Saturday a few hours after she suffocated the child she has been baby-sitting for six months.
Mary Kampurira, a Secretary at African College of Commerce in Kabale Municipality is the mother of the deceased.

Kyarikunda in a statement at police testified that she killed a baby with a pillow because the baby used to cry a lot whenever the mother was away.

She however said that she never intended to kill but rather lull her to sleep. Kampurira, the mother to the child said she was called from the College by a neighbor who heard Kyarikunda yelling for help after realizing that the baby had suffocated.

She said that few days ago, her maid started complaining that she was stressed because she was not paid her salary on time but kept home looking after a crying baby.

Bosco Arop, Kabale District Police Commander confirmed the arrest and said the suspect will be produced in court once their investigations are complete and charged with murder.
He warned mothers, especially those who leave young children with house cleaners to desist from such acts as they put the lives of their children at risk of being killed or poisoned.
