Kamuli teacher beats student to coma

A senior four student in the eastern district of Kamuli was admitted at Kamuli Health Care after being beaten into comma by her Arts teacher accusing her of staying in the dormitory during class hours.
 
Joan Nabirye,19, of Central College Kamuli in Kamuli town was beaten by Elijah Mutalya, before she collapsed on Monday morning.
 
Her classmates said Mutalya used a piece of wood to hit her on the back, shoulders and head before he gave her a hot slap that sent her unconscious.
 
They testified that a number of students were chatting in the dormitory as Nabirye tried to trace her English book in vein, before the teacher arrived to disperse them, beating them at random.
 
"We scampered out but she was victimized because she failed to escape. He descended on her like he was executing an order from above," a student said, adding," she yelled, "Master you have killed me," before she collapsed.
 
Students rushed to the scene to find her lying still, speechless as saliva oozed from her mouth and was taken to Kamuli Health Care.

The head teacher, Bazilio Isabirye condemned the act.

"He acted out of indignation, like a lunatic and I condemn it.  I am yet to resolve on his fate but he is to cater for the medical bills, before facing the disciplinary committee," Isabirye said.
 
By press time, Nabirye, who was on drip was yet to gain her consciousness but Dr. John Were assured she would recover.
 
"We are suppressing the trauma and reducing the internal injuries she sustained," Were said.
 
He father, George Bukaya, a resident of Nabwigulu reported the matter to Police that was yet to arrest the teacher.
 
The Chairman of Kamuli District Secondary Head teachers Association, Charles Kaziba warned teachers to maintain professional ethics and avoid breaching the teachers’ code of conduct.
 
“We can punish using other modes other than beating. He acted unprofessionally and should be cautioned and may be, he is not the first offender," Kaziba said.
