Unidentified thugs Tuesday morning gained entry into the offices of Samaritans Purse, an international NGO in city suburb and murdered a private security guard before making off with an undisclosed amount of money.

The incident happened at the premises of the NGO, located on Plot 11, Luthuli Drive in the plush Bugolobi suburb. Police suspect that the thugs could have struck in the heavy down pour in the night.

Samaritans Purse is an international Christian relief organization dealing with victims of war and natural disasters among others.

The thugs, police suspect, could have scaled over the perimeter wall fence before attacking Alex Adubango, a guard private security guard attached to Securex, a private security organization deployed at the place who they over powered and beat to death.

By the time the New Vision visited the scene of crime, the body of the victim lay in the compound, the face bruised and foaming in the mouth with one hand twisted, suggesting a fight.

Police rushed to the scene and sealed it off as it launched a major inquiry into the matter, interrogating and recording statements for the members of staff present. Curious residents thronged the scene but were not allowed access.

“The guard was alone and not armed that is part of the problem,” Jinja road police boss Wesley Nganizi who rushed to the scene said. Moments after murdering the guard, the thugs then burgled into the offices, forcing open two money safes and making off with an undisclosed sum.

“The investigations have only got underway and that is part of the detail we want to establish,” Nganizi said, adding that they are pursuing very valuable clues.  He however did not rule out insider participation, given that the NGO had the previous day brought in large sums of money.

“There is no way an outsider would know about the presence of the money,” he said. Neighbours expressed shock at the development, saying they never heard anything.
