Chinese firms have employed over 33,000 Ugandans in the last 19 years, according to Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) statistics.

Chinese ambassador Zhao Yali said due to the cordial relations between the two countries, China has several investments in Uganda which have created jobs for the citizens.

“Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has always supported Uganda in its nation building and industrialisation process and provides assistance with no political strings attached,” Yali noted.

He was speaking during a media reception at his residence in Kampala recently. The ambassador said the two countries have maintained good relations over the past 50 years with fruitful cooperation in trade, investment, communication, agriculture, technology and culture.

He said the amount of bilateral trade in 2012 reached $538m, an increase of 34.6% compared to 2011.

Yali said some of the major projects China has undertaken in Uganda include the exploration of oil, construction of Kampala-Entebbe Expressway and the purchase of road equipment to support infrastructure development in over 1,400 municipalities.

He pledged that China will continue expanding its investment and financial cooperation to Africa.

“China-Uganda friendship and cooperation will achieve new heights. Let us work together to seize historical opportunities to realise the Chinese dream and Uganda dream,” he said.
