Are vaginal fluids normal?

I am aged 25. I last had sex three months ago with my boyfriend, for the third time in my life. However, I woke up in the morning with overflowing mucus-like fluids in my private parts.

 Q   Dear Doctor,

I am aged 25. I last had sex three months ago with my boyfriend, for the third time in my life. However, I woke up in the morning with overflowing mucus-like fluids in my private parts. This got me confused and when I asked a friend, she said they could be vaginal fluids. Is it true, or am I sick?

A Dear Sarah,
The vagina serves as a passageway between the outside of the body and the inner reproductive organs. The PH balance of the vagina is acidic, which prevents infections from occurring. This acidic environment is created by bacteria.

A healthy vagina produces secretions to cleanse and regulate itself. These vaginal secretions are normal. Women will often discharge a clear fluid during or after sex.

However, if the discharge has a strange smell or is thicker than normal, you should consult a doctor because that could be an indication of an infection.
