The national boxing team is set to receive training and competition gear from undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather, who holds 10 world titles in different categories.
Through his Floyd Mayweather gym in Las Vegas, the boxer is set to send to the Uganda national boxing team-commonly known as The Bombers, an assortment of boxing kit every year to help them improve their talents and prepare for different competitions.
Former bomber Andrew Nyakana, who works with Atlantic Sports, is coordinating the project. The University of Nevada boxing gym in Las Vegas will also donate boxing kits to the national team. Nevada was the gym that Nyakana spent most of his time as a boxer.
“We are trying to see that we help boxing develop. The kit is quite expensive and though we cannot get actual funds, getting the boxers good kits to train in preparation for international event is also good enough and that is what we are promising,” said Nyakana as he handed over an assortment of kits to the Uganda Boxing Federation officials at their office in Lugogo.
Administration politics had denied boxers a chance to take part in international events including the London 2012 Olympic games but after the house was put in order, Uganda ‘s door to international completion opened with two boxers Super Heavy Mike Ssekabembe and light flyweight Fazil Juma Kaggwa winning bronze medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The performance has attracted recognition of the talent and the duo of Nyakana and Moses Matovu have decided to use this to see to it that Uganda boxing benefits.
“They have so much and they love Ugandans. We as promoters will also be helped if the boxers go through the ranks while training with standard gears. This means that they will gain experience to start professional boxing in the future,” he said.
