Bombo top favourites as CDF Games roll off

Bombo Army General Headquarters football team is one of the sides to beat at this year’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Games.

The competition will start at the 2nd Division Makenke Barracks ground in Mbarara on Friday.

The Games due to end next Friday, will have last year’s overall champions Bombo facing five divisions and other army special units in the country.

Teams ready for battle include Military Police Makindye, SFC, Air Defense Masindi, 5th Division Pader and Field Artillery Nakasongola.
The divisions that will be vying for honours include 1st Division Kakiri, hosts 2nd Division Mbarara, 3rd Division Moroto, 4th Division Gulu and 5th Division Pader.

They will be joined by teams from nine special units. They are Armory Masaka, Miltary Police Makindye, Air Defense Masindi, Artillery Masindi, Engineering Lugazi, Jinja/Magamaga Academy, SFC, Air force Entebbe and Field Arbitrary Nakasongola.

“We are ready for the competition and hope our forces from the different locations will interact well,” the 2nd Division Sports Officer — Warrant Officer One Mark Akankwasa said.

Akankwasa invited their civilian colleagues to turn up in big numbers for the Games.

The Chief of Defence Forces General Katumba Wamala is expected to officiate at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Meanwhile, the participating teams will have brand new uniforms and balls offered by the Wazalendo SACCO.

Wazalendo General Manager Pius Twimukye handed over the items to the UPDF Chief of Education, Sports and Culture Brigadier Phinehas Katirima on Thursday.

The SACCO, launched in 2005, comprises UPDF personnel, their families, members of the reserve force and the ministry of defence staff.
