There was drama at Parliament when a human rights activist Williams Ntege commonly known as “Kyuuma kya Yesu” beat Parliament’s tight security and staged a one -man demonstration.

Armed with a chain, Ntege tied his waist and ankles on the bridge to stop Police from pulling him away.

Wearing a yellow t-shirt with words reading; “Corruption eats into Police and government institutions. PAC investigate corrupt officials and recover our money,” stood strategically on the bride that joins Parliament’s South and North wings.

For almost an hour, Ntege stood without being noticed by the security officers. Whenever an MP would pass, Ntege would turn and let him or her read.

Below the bridge, journalists ignored him until he called one of them, pointing at his T-Shirt.

Ignored still, Ntege continued to pretend reading a text on some pieces of papers. However, his luck soon ran out when one journalist tipped MP Fox Odoi that there was a demonstrator standing on the bridge.  His presence soon attracted more curious MPs and passers-by.

Police ran quickly and straggled to remove the T-shirt from him only to be stopped by the chain that he had used to firmly tie himself on the metals that supports the bridge.

Not wanting to let go, Ntege shouted on top of his voice, making alarm, asking Police not to touch him. “Don’t touch me. Why are you tearing my clothes? Handle me like a human being,” he shouted attracting more attention.

As the straggle intensified, Ntege threatened to jump off the bridge.  The Police had to bring in a metal saw blade to cut the chain.  He was overpowered and whisked him away to the Parliament’s Police Command.

Parliament’s Police Officer in Charge SSP David Manzi although regretted the incident, he declined to comment.
Parliament recently tightened security involving all security agencies deployed at the premises. They include Joint Anti-terrorism task force (JATT), Police traffic, CIID, Internal Security Organization and the Army.

This is in addition to hi-tech modern security equipment which includes scanners, CCTV cameras.

Sources at Parliament say Police is however under scrutiny to explain how Ntege managed to smuggle a chain inside without being detected by the numerous police officers at the gates and the scanners.
