Ruth Sebatindira, who is a business lawyer, is the new president of the Uganda Law Society, taking over from James Mukasa Sebugenyi.

A founder and managing partner of Ligomarc Advocates, she will lead the law society for a year’s term, renewable but only for another year.

She thanked outgoing president Sebugenyi for setting a ‘foundation’ on which she will continue her presidency and appealed to lawyers to work with her to achieve effective administration of justice in the country.

She said for the next twelve months she will be office, the society will work to support the judiciary address its challenges, especially those of case backlogs.

They would also embark on a rule of law project where among other things, the society will work with the education ministry and the National Curriculum Development Centre to include in school syllabi the teaching of the country's constitution and improve the public’s perception of the legal profession.

“Yes, at times we register cases of indiscipline among our lawyers. But we have the professional code of conduct rules that govern and regulate the way we do our work,’’ said Sebatindira.

“Any lawyer in breach of the code of conduct is disciplined by a committee instituted by the law society.”
