MARGARET Zziwa, the speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, has advised institutions of learning to venture into new sectors including oil, petroleum, gas and mineral studies.

“We want our schools to re-orient the teaching to catch up with the new job market,” Zziwa said.

She made the remarks last Saturday, while presiding over the 20th anniversary celebrations of St. Lawrence Academy, Schools and Colleges at Crown City Campus.

She said parents and professionals in various disciplines should offer proper career guidance to their students, by talking to students and equipping them with the new global opportunities.

Zziwa added that students should be given basic knowledge on petroleum since they are the future employees of oil companies. She noted that the East African Community was harmonising the education systems in the universities of the East African partner states. Zziwa praised the proprietor of the schools Prof. Lawrence Mukiibi for promoting the East African integration in the education sector.

The chancellor of Makerere University, Mondo Kagonyera, hailed Mukiibi for his contribution in the education sector and asked educationists to emulate him.

He added that Makerere University was doing its best to assist other institutions so that more Ugandans can afford quality and affordable education.

During the celebrations, the best performing students, head teachers and managers were rewarded. Thousands of students from various St. Lawrence schools and their parents were entertained by the militaristic parade and marches from new entrants in the schools and foreign students.

Mukiibi said the schools had a humble beginning and have gradually grown over time. He said they had been ranked as number six among the best performing schools in the country and all his Senior Six leavers qualified for university education
