Ngaimoko misses IAAF mark

ALI Ngaimoko was the star in the first national track and field trials at Namboole on Saturday, but his exploits were not enough for him to hit the qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships due in Moscow in August.

Ngaimoko came first in his 200m heat clocking a hand time of 20.9 seconds, but was short of the 20.61 seconds qualifying mark for the global track and field Moscow showpiece. Ngaimoko’s pre-trial target was to hit the mark.

However the Police Club sprinter is not disappointed. Not as yet.

“It is still early. I will improve and I want to be in Moscow in August,” he stated assuredly.

Ngaimoko was the best sprinter last season, though he was again 0.43 seconds short of the qualifying mark. But with an increase in his work load and speed courtesy of instructions from coach Noah Ssengendo, the Police officer looks set to became the first male Ugandan runner to break through to the international season ever since Davis Kamoga made it in the 1990s.

Kamoga, a 400m runner, won bronze at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games and also won a silver medal in the Athens 1997 World Championships.
