Police in Mukono district have closed a school for teaching one subject, Islam.

The over thirty pupils were studying in an unregistered school in poor conditions.

Police with other security counterparts headed by Mukono District Deputy Resident Commissioner Martin Mugabi stormed a Maddrassah school located at Bwefulumya East in Nama sub-county, Mukono district after a tip off from the concerned residents about the unauthorized operating school.

Mukono District Police Commander, Alfred Bangambaki, said that the school had inadequate toilet facilities, lacked classrooms and dormitories.

Bangambaki said that the school was owned by a Muslim leader, Sheikh Muhammad Mbaziira who was not available by the time of closure.

During the operation, police arrested two women suspected to be Mbaziira’s wives who were keeping the children. They were identified as Sarah Nakanjakko and Fatuma Najjuma.

The District Inspector of Schools Rashid Kikomeko said that besides the school’s not being registered, it was conducting lessons outside the ministry curriculum.

“We have been shocked to find that the school only teaches Arabic and putting emphasis on the Quran. The pupils have told us that the Sheikh restricted them from learning other subjects taught in other schools saying they are satanic and the Quran forbids them,” said Kikomeko.
