Regional medics meet in Kampala over infection control

OVER 100 medical practitioners in the region are meeting at Speke Hotel Munyonyo for the East African Control Infection Conference 2013.


The two day conference which is ending February 22, (Friday) is organized by Saraya Company Limited supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Uganda.

It is aimed at discussing the challenges of health care and infection control in African countries, increase importance of hand hygiene, to change healthcare worker’s behaviors with respect to personal and environmental hygiene and sanitation practices, and to reduce the incident of health care associated infection.

The president of Saraya, Yusuke Saraya said the conference will also share the progress of various projects in Uganda and promote the importance of hand hygiene to prevent the Healthcare Association Infection (HAI).

Saraya has been working for hygiene improvement of public health care facilities in Uganda through hand hygiene with cooperation from JICA.

Yusuke said two district hospitals were selected as pilot hospitals to use Saraya Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer to analyze the acceptability of the products and behavior change in terms of hand washing by health workers.

“The conference is to discuss the infection control in Africa, sharing the hygiene situation in African countries to learn what challenges they are facing, how hospitals in Uganda are tackling those challenges and how World Health Organisation (WHO) is supporting and approaching it,” he said.

The conference will have several speakers including the Prof. Didier Pittet a hospital epidemiologist and director of Infection Control Programme and WHO collaborating center on patient safety, University of Geneva Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine and Prof, Khama Rogo, Prof. Khama Rogo, World Bank Lead Health Sector Specialist, Head of Health in Africa Initiative among others.
