Top city law firm dissolved over ''lack of trust''

A Kampala law firm which has handled some of Uganda’s biggest cases has been dissolved over what the senior partners termed as ‘lack of trust’.

Kampala law firm Muwema and Mugerwa Advocates & Solicitors, which has handled some of Uganda’s biggest cases, has been dissolved over what the senior partners termed as ‘lack of trust’.
 
Four of the five lead partners; Herbert Kiggundu, Siraj Ali, Brian Kabayiza and Terence Kavuma resolved to dissolve the firm, which has been operational since 1998.
 
According to the information obtained, the four partners have reached irreconcilable differences with Fred Muwema and subsequently agreed to dissolve the firm.
 
The resolution of dissolution dated October 25, states: “At the partners’ meeting of Muwema and Mugerwa Advocates and Solicitors held on October 25, 2014 at the firm’s registered office, it was proposed and resolved as hereunder that the firm Muwema Mugerwa be resolved effective December 1, 2014,” the resolution reads.
 
The partners agreed that after December 1, the firm shall continue to carry on business only relating to winding up its business and to complete pending transactions that were initiated prior to the dissolution.
 
It was also agreed that the notice of resolution of the firm be communicated to the other employees of the firm within seven days from the day of dissolution.
 
The partners said the resolution will be registered with the regulatory authority not later than November 15.
 
Muwema, Mugerwa Advocates and Solicitors handled high-profile cases such as that of former Libyan leader Col. Muamar Gadaffi, a defamation case of Toro Queen, a road license case amounting to over sh2b, British American Tobacco farmers’ case involving about sh4b and Rock Petroleum versus Uganda Revenue Authority case over sh9b.
 
The firm also defended Mike Mukula in a corruption case over the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.
 
The firm was founded by Fred Muwema and Herbert Kiggundu Mugerwa in October 1998.
 
Over the years, it has grown into a partnership of five assisted by one associate and 80 legal assistants and supported by 10 administrative staff.
