IGP Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura has directed that those arrested for drunk-driving will not be released on bond until they are arraigned in court!

Kayihura, who gave the directive on Sunday in Lyantonde District, is currently on a countrywide security sensitisation tour.  He gave the directive after commending the Police that were carrying out a drunk-driving operation in Lyantode.

Following the directive, over 23 drunk drivers who were arrested in a weekend operation at Katwe police were locked up till Monday when they appeared in court. The operaton was commanded by Katwe polce traffic chief James Rumanyika.

Among those arrested were notably the ones bearing Islam names like Ismail Ssewanyana, Issa Ndyambaze, Abdu Wasswa, Adam Bukenya and Muzamiru Muyomba.

There was drama when some of the suspects jibed at police for making their lives hell by arresting those with 'money' to spend so they can take their children to school.

One of them asked Rumanyika: " Is the money I have spent on booze yours?" "Why do you waste energy on us who spend money from our own sweat instead of arresting thieves!" Undetered, Rumanyika said they would intensify their operations epecially on weekends to curb accidents due to drunk-driving.
