Soroti municipality MP and former health state minister Mike Mukula will not be accorded VIP treatment while in jail in Luzira, the Prisons authorities have said.

Speaking to the New Vision, Prisons publicist Frank Baine said the jailed legislator is like any ordinary inmate.

“Mukula was admitted to ward B1 of Murchison Bay Prison, but did not get VIP treatment. He is like any other prisoner. Upon admission, he was allocated a cubicle, which he shares with two other inmates,”

“According to the nature of his offence, Mukula does not deserve to be isolated from other prisoners. He is also not a long termer,” Baine added.

The Anti-corruption Court last week convicted Mike Mukula and sentenced him to four years in jail for embezzling sh210m from Global Alliance Vaccination for Immunisation (GAVI). Sh1.6b was lost in the GAVI scam.

Mukula was allocated a prison number – MBP 148/2013 – and a yellow uniform.

The Prisons authorities also revealed that no extra security arrangement has been made for Mukula because Luzira is a maximum security prison and is capable of taking care of any category of prisoner in their custody.

“Mukula is supposed to have meals prepared within the prison. However, in case of health problems that deserve attention, Prisons authorities will grant his family permission to provide a special diet,” Baine said.

However, Mukula can receive newspapers from his family. He can also watch TV and listen to radio provided by the Prisons.
