USPA boxer of the year Joseph Lubega hopes to use his forthcoming fight against fellow Ugandan Noor Mustapha to gauge himself for the defence of his World Boxing Council International light heavyweight title.

Lubega (14(7kos)- 6-1) has to defend the world title in May and he has said that the tune up fight at Club Obligato next month will help him know how he stands ahead of the title defence.

It is not a contest between Lubega and Mustapha. The two boxers met at Charter Hall, Nairobi, Kenya in 2011 and Lubega knocked out Mustapha in the fourth round. Mustapha has had 22 fights, winning none, drawn thrice and succumbed to 11 knockouts.

“I want to test myself so that I know my stand before the defence fight. I need to know how I’m doing. Ten rounds are good enough for me to prepare for my title defense. I do not need a very strong person and Mustapha is good enough,” Lubega said.

He knocked out Kirt Sinnette in Trinidad and Tobago’s city of Port-of-Spain to win the previously vacant World Boxing Council international title.
