THE Democratic Party (DP) has said that short of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi being held accountable for alleged wrongs committed while still in good books of the NRM leadership ranks and openly declaring his interests in the 2016 polls, they cannot speak their minds about him.

DP said they cannot get excited because Mbabazi was dropped from cabinet as prime minister or because he temporarily left office as NRM secretary general.

Speaking at the party’s weekly media briefing in Kampala, de-facto president of the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), a youth group affiliated to DP Gerald Siranda said, “we really want to keep our minds reserved about the controversies surrounding Amama because there is nothing to be excited about unless he denounces his past actions and declares which side he wants to work for now.”

On Monday, Mbabazi took an unprecedented leave from the duties of the NRM secretary general after pressure to relinquish the position was mounted on him from varying sections of his party members, accusing him of working against the party and harbouring interests to stand against incumbent Yoweri Museveni.

The letter that announced the move came just weeks after Mbabazi was dropped from cabinet as prime minister and replaced by Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

Siranda said Mbabazi has never been held accountable for the corruption scandals he was implicated in while still in NRM’s good books and because of that, they cannot welcome him because they are not on the same page regarding good governance.

“I don’t see why we have to dance for a man who has never said he has left the corrupt NRM. Besides that, even if he did, we can only work with him when he has been held accountable for his alleged corruption,” Siranda explained.

He also noted that, “those in the struggle might be celebrating for the wrong reasons because if Mbabazi and Museveni reconcile, it will only work against the opposition.”

Mbabazi’s woes started when it was alleged that he was interested in running for presidency in the 2016 general elections. Since then, some members of the opposition have called upon Mbabazi to join them in fighting the incumbent NRM.
