THE World Bank has applauded the way Uganda dealt with the Ebola epidemic in the year 2000, Maria Kiwanuka, the finance minister has revealed upon her return from Washington.

“We should applaud our unsung heroes who made sure our episode of Ebola was quickly contained. I have been at the World Bank and we were applauded for dealing with the Ebola virus within our budget,

“It showed that even with the little financial resources, the current structure of our health ministry was able to deal with the epidemic,” Kiwanuka said after inaugurating the 6th Insurance Regulatory Board (IRA) at the finance ministry.

Before the epidemic in West Africa, the worst outbreak at the time was recorded in Uganda in 2000. More than 425 people contracted the Ebola virus and nearly half died mainly in the northern district of Gulu.

A global UN appeal for nearly $1 billion (sh2.7 trillion) has so far fallen short, with only $385.9 million given by governments and agencies, and a further $225.8 million promised.
