Police forward MP Kipoi treason files to DPP

The Police have preferred a holding charge of treason against Bubulo East MP Tony Nsubuga Kipoi, who was arrested on Sunday in Kabarole district in connection with alleged subversive activities.

The deputy police spokesperson, Vincent Sekate, yesterday said the Police had preferred the charge and had forwarded the MP’s file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“We are now waiting for advice from the DPP,” Sekate said.

By Friday afternoon, the legislator was still being held at the Police’s Special Investigations Unit in Kireka, a city suburb.

Several MPs, among them Simon Mulongo (Bubulo West), turned up to visit Kipoi.

The Police said in a statement that at the time of his arrest, Kipoi was holding a meeting with some Ugandan security officers and Congolese rebel officers. The alleged officers and rebels were also arrested.

The Police said prior to Kipoi’s arrest, they had been closely monitoring him for his alleged involvement in subversive activities in and out of the country.

“In particular, he has been recruiting personnel from our security services as well as Congolese rebels belonging to a Congolese rebel group called COGAI. The group is based in areas around Bunia and Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He had promised to support the rebel groups with firearms,” Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said in the statement.

The Police said they also had information that Kipoi, who is also being probed on charges of drug trafficking, was working with the support of foreign sponsors, whose identities, the Police declined to divulge.
