How to maintain perm rods

Q: After satisfying the longing for perm rods, I cannot help but wonder how long they can last and how I can care for them. I want to turn heads whenever I leave the house.

A: Perm rods are a funky hairstyle that is made up of a lot of curls. How long the style will stay will vary with the length of your hair. Short hair will retain curls longer than long hair, which is heavier at the ends. You can wear the style for at least two weeks, so you will turn heads for a while.

Not to lose the curls fast, tie a scarf on your head before you go to bed. Whereas some stubborn strands may go astray, the scarf will keep a large portion of your curly hair in place.

It is better to invest in a silk or satin scarf other than cotton which absorbs the oil from the hair. And each morning, you can separate and fluff the hair with your hands.

When combing, be gentle with how you do it. Use a tail end comb or an afro-comb (commonly known as ‘lifter’). Lift curls gently and pat it down so that the hair does not go wild.

You may have to keep away from travelling by boda bodas as the wind will send the hair wild and curls unfolding.

Do not let your hair get wet, as water will mean losing the curls, most especially if it is virgin hair — unrelaxed hair, and it will end up harder to comb and that will require another saloon visit. Setting the style takes about two hours at sh25,000 — sh35,000.

Carefully, part the hair and oil the scalp, and for a shiny look and firm curls, use hair spray spritz. After a few days, use a hair band or add a flower, tie a scarf, pin the side in a way you desire.
