UCU lecturers speak out on leaked exams

Lecturers at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono have spoken out on how some of the semester’s examination papers leaked to the students.

New Vision on Wednesday published a story that the University had cancelled a number of examination papers after some students were arrested with question papers.

The university’s deputy vice chancellor for academic affairs, Dr. Alex Kagume had earlier said that the university was investigating four students over the leakage.

But we have since learnt from some lecturers who were teaching the cancelled papers that the students got the leaked examinations from the printery.

Zack Mulawa, a teaching assistant of one of cancelled papers, said the student who was arrested with the examination papers confessed he got them from a cousin who works at the city printery where the exams were printed.

“The student said he had got the papers on freewheel from his cousin who works at the printery. But we don’t know whether he shared them with his colleagues at a cost or not, “he said.

It was established that the university has a running contract with a city private printery to process exams for some papers, while others are printed at the university.

Another lecturer said, “The exams printed outside the university were the ones which leaked because there are no strict mechanisms to ensure their safety.”

Mulawa said following the cancellation of the exams, students had started blaming their lecturers who set the exams for unscrupulously leaking them.

“But I want to assure you that no lecturer would be daft enough to give students question by question because they know they would be caught,” Mulawa said.

As a result of the cancellation of the examination papers, students will have to do the exam on a crush programme, which will involve sitting for three or four papers a day.

“This will put students under a lot of pressure which could affect their performance,” Mulawa said

New Vision has since learnt that the person suspected to have let out the examination papers to the students has been arrested by Police in Mukono.
