Police caution drivers ahead of Christmas

The Police has cautioned drivers to be mindful of traffic rules and regulations ahead of the festive season.

The central region Police spokesperson, Lamech Kigozi, said accidents during the festive season are often as a result of errors triggered by fatigue.

Kigozi made the revelation while addressing journalists at the weekly media briefing at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

Kigozi said with most highways under construction, drivers tend to drive on shoulders and end up causing accidents. He gave an accident in Lugazi that claimed several lives near Kikawulo trading centre.

Kigozi added that most accidents were caused by recklessness, drink-driving and talking on phones while driving.

“The driver ignored the signpost indicating road construction ahead and decided to drive on the road shoulders,” Kigozi said.

He said traffic Police had been deployed at such places to arrest the reckless drivers.

Speaking at the same briefing, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Ibin Senkumbi, warned the public about the increasing cases of house burglary.

He advised people to always lock their houses and stores to avoid such cases.
