KAMPALA - Days before Lynn Mbabazi went missing, she received a phone call from an unidentified person, who warned her against talking about circumstances relating to the death of MP Barnabas Tinkasiimire’s first wife Agnes Ageno.

The deceased died last year at Mulago Hospital from severe burns sustained in an arsonist attack on her house in Mukono while she slept. The legislator later married Mbabazi, but the couple separated eight months ago.

After she received the threats, Mbabazi recorded a statement at Katwe Police Station in which she said she recognised the caller’s voice as that of her estranged husband, Tinkasiimire.

Mbabazi’s statement was recorded on September 18, under the reference number SD69/18/09/2014 under the charge of threatening violence.

New Vision’s attempts to speak to Tinkasiimire on Thursday about the case proved futile since he did not pick calls made to his known telephone number. This is not the first time the estranged couple has run to the Police.

Tinkasimire had earlier reported that his car, a Toyota Nadia registration number UAT 762K, had been stolen. The case was referenced under SD74/2/09/2014.

However, Mbabazi challenged the allegation, saying the car was a birthday gift from her husband (Tinkasimire). “I sold it (car) to another person after noticing it was not fuel friendly,” Mbabazi explained in a recorded statement at police. Mbabazi was detained briefly.

“By the time of her disappearance, Mbabazi had been released on police bond on allegations of theft of the motor vehicle,” Benon Ayebare, the Katwe Police officer in charge of criminal investigations revealed yesterday. “We were supposed to match the private line she received a phone call. Unfortunately, she disappeared before we had secured the print-out,” said Ayebare.

New Vision could not independently identify the caller nor verify the caller’s conversation with Mbabazi.

Meanwhile, the #FindLynn campaign has been trending on Twitter and other social media. A local non-governmental organisation, Missing Persons, which helps search for missing people, also joined in.

Mbabazi’s mother, Mabel Bakeine, who is the Kibale district Woman MP tweeted: “Lynn Mbabazi is my daughter. The family last heard from her on Friday at 8:00am. We are concerned. Help find #Lynn.” Mbabazi an employee of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, was formerly a television presenter on Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
