KAMPALA - As several political blocs start to build up ahead of the 2016 general polls, the former vice-president, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has said he cannot rule out working with President Yoweri Museveni again.

The Busiro North MP, who served as vice-president in Museveni’s government from 2003 until 2011, told journalists on Thursday: “In politics, there are no permanent friends and enemies.”

Describing politics as “a zig-zag game”, Bukenya said he does not display all his political cards on the table, and asked Ugandans to wait for surprises as the 2016 general elections begin to take shape.

“If you see me tomorrow negotiating with Museveni and NRM; are you going to curse me? If he fulfills the principles of democracy, respects the rights of people and unity in diversity, I will negotiate with him. But you people will abuse me because you think in a superficial way,” he said.

Bukenya also described his political friendship with former prime minister Amama Mbabazi as cordial, and invited the Kikiizi West MP to “say the reality and discuss the future of our country” now that the Cabinet principle of collective responsibility no longer affects him. Bukenya was addressing journalists at his offices in Rubaga.

Asked whether he would contest on the NRM party card for the 2016 elections, Bukenya said he has learnt to play secretive politics.

“Politics is a zig-zag game. If you make it straight and you tell the end point, you will never reach there. Some of you call us little brains, but we are intellectually powerful. We do not say certain things, and that is what keeps us going,” he said.

Bukenya also launched an office in Rubaga, which he said would be the guard point for negotiations with various political and non-political actors for the 2016 electoral platform.

“The issues that we want to negotiate must be diverse. I want to bring a negotiation team that has knowledge.

"During these negotiations, we shall write down everything we have discussed. We shall not negotiate verbally like the Kabaka Yekka and UPC did in the 60s. We want a knowledgeable team and all political parties, including NRM, will be represented,” he said.
