The Government has been asked to rescue Kiyindi Muslim Primary School, which stakeholders say is in a sorry state. The school, which is located at Kiyindi landing site, Najja sub-county in Buikwe district, has only one classroom block, which is incomplete.

Sheikh Abubaker Ssekitoleko, the head of Islamic religious teachers, said the school was taken over by the Government in 2004, but still has only the one incomplete classroom block which was constructed by the members of the community.

Ssekitoleko, who is also the Imam of Ali Mosque in the area, told New Vision at the school on Wednesday that the building accommodates pupils of Primary One, Two, Four and Six.

Due to the lack of structures, leaders were forced to accommodate the pupils of Primary Three, Five and Seven in the house meant for the Imam in charge of the mosque.

“I could not look on while other pupils were not studying,” he said. Apart from paying teachers’ salaries, Ssekitoleko explained that the Government has not extended any other facilitation such as text-books to the school.

He said the school does not have enough desks to accomodate the 380 pupils.
Ssekitoleko also added that the school shares a pit-latrine with the public due to the absence of a fence.

“Our school is not fenced and as a result, people just pass wherever to ease themselves from our toilet yet our faith does not allow us to block anybody from using such facilities,” said Ssekitoleko.
