Gweri village gets power ahead of Komuntale wedding

Residents of Gweri parish in Karambi sub-county, Kabarole district have got electricity ahead of Princess Ruth Komuntale’s wedding on Saturday.

Komuntale is set to have a traditional ceremony known as Kweranga (giveaway) in Gweri on Thursday.

During this function, her American fiance Christopher Thomas will be introduced to the royal family.

The Kweranga ceremony will be held at Kamurasi’s home before the wedding at St. John’s Cathedral Fort Portal on Saturday.

Gweri, which is 4km away from Fort Portal town, had never been connected to the national electricity grid.

Charles Kamurasi, the Babiito royal clan head, said the project, which is estimated to cost sh215m, is being carried out under the rural electrification programme.

Some parts of the parish have already got power and work is ongoing to extend power to the entire parish.

“The royal wedding has brought opportunities for residents of Gweri. The electricity has added value to our area. I hope to expand my business because Gweri is now a town,” William Nyakana, a shop owner, said.

Joseph Mashuhuko, the councillor for Karambi sub-county, urged the residents to welcome the developments with hard work.

Kabarole LC5 chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga last Saturday said piped water had been extended to the area at a cost of sh7.2m.

Meanwhile, Komuntale’s paternal aunt based in the UK has sent her a congratulatory message and counsel.
