KAMPALA – The assessors in the murder trial of six people accused of shooting dead former Electoral Commission chief accountant, Ben Mawanda say they have proven the participation of four of them in the offense.

They told court that they had established “beyond every reasonable doubt” that four of the six accused took part in the killing of the EC official.

Appearing before Justice Rugadya Atwooki, the assessors – Ben Muhwezi and Rehema Babirye – said they had found that the accused “undoubtedly killed Mawanda”.

The trial started in October at the High Court with Mawanda’s wife Rose Nakazibwe narrating to court how thugs attacked them and killed her husband.

During her emotional testimony before court, in the middle of which she gave way to tears, she spoke fondly of her murdered husband who left her struggling with two children.

Main judge Atwooki further remanded into custody the accused men; Yusuf Lubega, Abdu Male, Allan Kamwana and Abbas Jemba, until November 8, when he will pass judgment on them.

It is alleged that on the night of July 6, 2011 (around 11pm), the accused gunned down Mawanda at his house in Kyengera just after he had routinely gotten back home from work.
