KAMPALA - Cabinet has approved the adoption of a single spine agricultural system to replace the National Agricultural Advisory System (NAADS) programme, hitherto marred in efficacy complications.

Information and national guidance minister Rose Namayanja told the press about Cabinet’s decision at the media centre.

She said the NAADS secretariat as it has been known will now be re-organised into a leaner secretariat.

“It will have more redefined roles oriented towards input acquisition for strategic interventions besides paying for salaries, workshops and conferences,” she said.

Meanwhile, the ministry has been asked to halt the previously planned recruitment of sub-county extension staff using the money allocated to NAADS for the next financial year.

Cabinet, according to Namayanja, also approved increased budgetary provision for quality seed procurement, planting and animal breeding stock, particularly to anticipate an increase in demand next financial year.

It also directed the establishment of seven focal pulping centres (fruit factories) in Luwero, Kayunga, Masaka, Soroti, Arua and Ntungamo districts to add value to fruits grown in these districts.
