Qualifiers

The She Cranes netball team will on Thursday enter their fourth day of training as they prepare to battle for the remaining slot on the continent for the World Cup scheduled for early next year in Sydney, Australia.

Africa will field three countries and the final selection will be based on the results from the Africa World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for September 13-20 in Gaborone, Botswana.

Currently Uganda is in 15th position on the international rating and fourth in Africa behind Tanzania, and a position
above Botswana on the international list.

It’s among the three countries that only the best will be picked to join Africa’s top sides Malawi and South Africa who are fifth and sixth in the world.

Malawi and South Africa will also be taking part in the weeklong event in Botswana but this has not hindered the She Crane’s team manager Jocelyn Ucanda from crediting her team as one of the best on the continent.

“We have more chances of performing better at the qualifiers because, truth be told, we have ever played Africa’s best teams and we proved that we are better,” Ucanda said yesterday during the team’s training at the Makerere University sports grounds.

The team undergoing training under coach Wilberforce Mutete and Fred Mugerwa still needs about $75,000 (sh195m) to have them participate at the qualifiers, according to Ucanda.

The team of 13 players under training includes Hadijah Nakabuye, Halima Nakachwa, Alice Nanteza, Suzan Atino, Florence Nanyonga, Enid Abalo, Lillian Agio, Carol Alupo, Beatrice Zawadi, Florence Atino, Florence Adonia, Flavia Nalule and Desire Obua.
