The remaining census enumeration days will be enough to cater for those whose data has not yet been captured in the ongoing National Housing and Population census, according to a top official at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).

Godfrey Nabongo, the census team leader for advocacy and publicity told the New Vision that most of the enumerators had fulfilled their tasks and are set to back their colleagues in hard to reach areas.

Nabongo however advised those who leave their homes very early and come back late to inform their local authorities.

“I am making a formal call to whoever has not yet been enumerated to notify the local authorities near you such that they can make follow ups,” he said adding that the enumerators are mostly faced with a challenge of enumerating people who don’t leave anyone at home.

Nabongo however said the floods sweeping through Kumi and some of the neighbouring areas have made it inaccessible for the enumerators to carry on with their work, hence making it a challenge for them.

He also said the issue of cult leaders especially in the Southern parts of the country who have stopped their followers from taking part in the census exercise has barred the enumerators from accessing these areas.

Nabongo said that in the event that the cult leaders continue barring their people from participating in the enumeration exercise, they shall face arrest.

“We shall count them from the police cells,” he said.

Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson said there were isolated cases in which seven people were arrested in Kisoro and 19 in the Elgon region (Bulambuli) for sabotaging their colleagues from participating in the census enumeration exercise. He said other individuals were also arrested in Bulambuli for stealing census materials.

Enanga also said in Masaka, family men were discouraging their wives from interacting with the enumerators and often stopped the enumerators from coming close to their homes.
