Former Rugby Cranes 15s team coach Yayiro Kasasa takes charge of the national sevens team that regroups on Friday at Kyadondo ahead of the Safaricom 7s tournament due September 27-28 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kasasa, who was Tolbert Onyango’s assistant in both the Masaku 7s in Kenya and the just concluded Commonwealth Games, takes full charge of the team because Onyango has relocated to Nairobi.

“Kasasa takes charge of the team now but Tolbert remains head coach,” rugby union CEO Ramsey Olinga clarified to New Vision.

Kasasa, when contacted, said he will be taking the team that went to the Commonwealth Games because there is no time to call in more players.

“Our programme was from Commonwealth Games to the Africa Sevens. So we are maintaining the team with only Brian Kikawa and James Odong coming in,” Kasasa explained. The two replace Benon Kiiza and Philip Pariyo who never returned with the team from Scotland.

The team will use the Safaricom Sevens as preparations for the Africa 7s later in November.

The team also has Solomon Okias, Emmanuel Echudu, Jasper Ochan, Philip Wokorach, Cyrus Wattum, Alfred Bijik, Michael Wokorach, Lawrence Ssebuliba, Asuman Mugerwa, James Ijongat, Charles Okou, Gabriel Aredo, James Musiitwa, Lawrence Wakabi and Keith Sseruyange.
