The High Court has stopped the disciplinary committee of the Law Council from suspending city lawyer Augustine Ssemakula pending appeal against its ruling.

The court also stopped the order by the disciplinary committee of the Law Council requiring Ssemakula to pay about sh5b as monies he allegedly owed the former workers of Dairy Corporation Limited.

The Committee had suspended Ssemakula from legal practice for two years with effect from the date of its ruling. It had also ordered that Ssemakula takes only 10% instead of 35% which the former Dairy Workers had agreed to pay him from the gross award if he won the case for them against the Government.

John Mary Kiwuuwa, the chairman of the disciplinary committee headed the panel. The other members were outgone chairman Elija Wante, Bruce kyerere, Eva Luswata- Kawuma and Mariam Namutebi.

Justice Eldad Mwangusya of the High Court issued the interim order that was signed by the court's registrar, John Eudes Keitirima on Thursday.

"It is hereby ordered that the the ordered issued by the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Council suspending the applicant from practice for two years from August 31, 2012 is granted," the order reads in part.

This followed an application by Rashid Babu and Vincent Kiggundu, who represented Ssemakula, seeking to stop the implementation of the orders made by disciplinary committee last August.
