KAMPALA - The annual Green festival took place at Kololo Independence Ground with over 20,000 children, brought by their parents, last week , cramming the venue to capacity.

Children are open-minded human beings who interact freely when given freedom by parents, and that was the exact picture at the Independence grounds.

Some tots mixed on the bouncing castles, some mingled, some went to swim, others to participate in the drawing competitions in the Toto Magazine tent and others got on the children’s train as others cheered on their age-mates who took to the stage to showcase several talents like dancing, modeling and acrobatics.

Parents started streaming to the venue as early as 9:00pm and let their children enjoy all the fun, after all it is holiday time and perhaps all homework has been done by their kids.

This Green festival event is a campaign to protect the environment through activities like planting trees and watering them.

At the event, one of the main highlights was having the makeshift zoo pitched at the grounds by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Children and even parents marveled at the lioness, leopard, serval cat, ostrich and the python that were caged.

Some of the performances that thrilled revelers at the event came from the dancing kids who featured in singer Eddy Kenzo’s Sitya Loss video. They danced the same strokes that have garnered them international acclaim.

There will be Green Festival event in December when children return for their third term holidays.

Organizer Joseph Masembe, the Chief executive officer My kid Is A Superstar, said at the event that campaigns like these help protect the country’s future through children.

“The future of our great pearl of Africa lies with our children. Getting them to own environmental conservation mantle is key to our environmental sustainability as a nation and people,” he said.

“The green family love exhibited at this year’s Green festival is testament to the fact that Uganda’s Little hands go green is making the right strides. The symbolism of the pearl of Africa hosting the only Green festival should not be forgotten.

“For many people, climate change is still a myth but in Uganda where we have already lost more than 2 thirds of our tree cover in the last two decades alone, the need to avert the looming environmental crisis is more real than ever. It’s now or never.

The sponsors of this year's event included; Crown Beverages, Finca, Igongo Cultural Centre, National Council for Children, Silk Events, Capital FM and Vision Group's Toto Magazine.

There will another event of this kind dubbed Green Xmas Party scheduled for December 14 at the same venue.

The event ended at 6:00pm.
