Mwinyi finishes the 5 km cancer run

Retired Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi Sunday morning was chief runner of the 3rd Cancer run in Kampala where the Rotary Club of Uganda managed to collect over sh300m.


Mwinyi at 89 managed to go all the way of 5 km in the event that attracted close to 20,000 participants in the 10 and 21 km races as well.

He urged Ugandans and Kenyans to resume spreading the Swahili language that was initiated to unite the people of the East African countries way back but the efforts were frustrated by Kenya and Uganda.

Vice President of Uganda, Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi also took part in the event.

The funds drive was to collect money to finish civil works of the cancer ward at Nsambya hospital that has so far required sh1.3b and is expected to be launched in January 2015 according to one of the organizers, Rotarian Mike Sebalu.

Runners from the Police team took the day in the 21 km men category where Alex Cherop won the event in 59:80 minutes followed by Peter Kibet (1:00.25 ) and Francis Chemonges in third position in 1:29.00.

In the ladies, Lilian Anzazi finished the 21 km race.

The 10 Km race was won by Rachael Kimbugwe in the women followed by Nubu Kitakubye and Aisha Kabanda in third position.
The men had Emmanuel Nankunda winning the gold medal followed by Paul Kavuma while the 5 km event had Regina Cheritoch and Edrisa Bukosi winning in the women and men categories respectively.

After the race, retired President Hassan Mwinyi led a raffle that was won by Grace Namagembe, a vendor at Salaama Munyonyo.

She won a car Toyota Virtz that was donated by St. Lawrence University.

The event organized by the Rotary Club of Uganda was sponsored by centenary Bank, Crown Bottlers (Pepsi) and Mukwano Aqua Sipi among others.
