A student died after being rushed to Masaka referral hospital while four others are in critical condition.

The victims were ploughed by a speeding faulty passenger van at Bajja near Lukaya in Kalungu on the Kampala-Masaka High way.

The victims were among the students who participated in celebrating 100 years of Uganda police force. They were marching down the highway where the bus came from behind and knocked some of them.

Deo Kweyamba, the officer in charge of traffic Kalungu district identified the deceased as Hellen Ngabire an S.4 candidate at St Charles Lwanga SSS, Kasasa.

Other victims who are nursing serious injuries are David Mawejje S.4, Francis Wasswa a senior six candidate and Patricia Ndagire

The preliminary reports indicate that the accident took place as a passenger bus registration number UAL 779U belonging to the Safaris Buses company, whose driver Sadayo Muhanje 43 a resident of Mutundwe in Kampala, failed to brake and crashed into a students' band that was marching along the highway.

After the accident Muhanje who was from Mbarara to Kampala, tried to drive off but he was later intercepted by the police patrols and detained at Lukaya police station from where he was transferred to Masaka due to fear of the angry mob that was about invade the station to kill him.

Br.Anthony Lubwama, the head teacher St Charles Lwanga SSS, Kasasa explained that being holiday all band participants came from their homes

Among the dignitaries who were attending the occasion, include the Kalungu RDC Shafiq Ssekandi and the Kalungu East MP Vincent Ssempijja who also witnessed the scene of the accident.

Hon. Ssempijja condemned the bus drivers who don’t respecting other road users and argued the traffic police to re-enforce the road rules and regulations because innocent people are dying due to reckless driving almost every day.

The Police said that Muhanje would be charged in court with reckless driving when the police investigations are completed.
