After successfully holding the Africa Cross Country championships in March, Uganda has confirmed its bid to host the 2017 World Cross Country championships.
The government and Kampala City Council Authority, the host city, have promised their full support to the event, which is set to attract over 500 competitors from over 70 countries across the world. The Africa cross country championships attracted participants from 47 countries.
Commissioner for sports Omara Apitta, the federation president, Domenic Otuchet and technical official Michael Byaruhanga will travel to Marrakech to make presentations of Uganda’s bid to the IAAF Council meeting that will be held alongside the Intercontinental Cup that is set for September 13-14.
The final bidding process will be in Monaco in October this year.
According to Otuchet, the Africa cross country was a learning process and the ideas they have are enough to host the world event.
“We have the ground, the hotel and the basic infrastructure required,” said Otuchet.
Uganda will be battling Bahrain for the right to host the event.
