Willy Kitatta believes he is set to win this year’s Tusker Malt Uganda Open golf title having finished as runner-up for the past three consecutive years.

Kitatta who has spent the past month playing in various PGA Pro golf tour tournaments in Europe says he is more prepared than ever before for the event due September 1-6 at Kitante.

“I’ve not been relaxing where I have been. I have been training and playing with the best golfers in Europe so the experience and exposure I have gained is invaluable,” Kitatta said on Tuesday.

“Though I didn’t make the cut my performance wasn’t bad because the playing conditions (rain) I encountered were far different from what I’m used to, but I’m winning the open no doubt about that,” Kitatta stated.

But much as Kitatta is oozing with confidence, he will be up against a strong field of amateurs that include three previous winners in Rogers Byaruhanga, Phillip Kasozi and Peter Sendawula.

Uganda National team players who have also been in camp for the East Africa Golf Challenge and those of Rwanda and Kenya will give Kitatta a run for his money.

Seasoned players; Gideon Kagyenzi, Francis Ngabo and Stephen Katwiremu, are all in the running for the annual championship.

Karanja Karubiu Junior alongside Herman “Deco” Mutebi will be the youngest players to play in this Open, alongside other junior national team players like Andrew Byaruhanga and Ronald Otile.

One hundred and two players, 13 of which are foreign entries will compete in the main event that tees off on September 3.

The main event will be contested for by golfers of handicap 0-8 while the subsidiary event will have players of handicap 9-15.

Several sponsors that include Uganda Tourism Board, Tusker, Sheraton, South African Airways, KK Security, Case Medical Centre, and HAS have been lined up to make this year’s event the biggest and best ever.
