A centre post try by fly half Jasper Ochen and conversion by Philip Wokorach handed Heathens the 2014 Nile Special Uganda Cup title with a 10-8 defeat of Kobs at Legends Kampala Rugby Club on Saturday.

Coach Brian Tabaruka attributed the victory to determination of his charges and the hunger to end the season with a trophy after they lost the league to Kobs and 7s circuit title to Buffaloes.

“When I told you that we shall do what it takes to win the title, it was not just to please you but I had seen it from the boys during training and the mood in the camp,” Tabaruka stated after the game.

“We trained hard and we have to fight to the last minute, that is why even after missing those two penalties at the start, we never gave up but kept the pressure on them which gave us results,” an excited Tabaruka stressed.

Kobs captain Brian Odongo conceded defeat and promised their fans revenge next season.

James Ijongat gave the hosts Kobs the lead through a penalty but Heathens replied in similar fashion to end half time 3-3 level.

In the second half, Kobs continued to mount pressure and managed to regain an 8-3 lead after a try by centre Brian Asaba.

Heathens regrouped and mounted pressure playing in Kobs’ half till they managed a try by Jasper Ochen and conversion by Philip Wokorach in the final minutes of the game to give Heathens their eight Uganda Cup title since it started in 1999.

Meanwhile Eric Wabwire, John Sairo, Edie Kiwanuka and Dr. Sam Guma are the four fans who won a fully funded Nile Special trip to Dubai and watch the HSBC Rugby 7s series this year.
