One injured in nine-car pileup

OWNERS of nine cars are counting loses after a Fuso truck carrying scrap from Ntinda, a city suburb crashed into their cars on Thursday evening.

The accident that occurred at Ntinda New Market junction on Stretcher Road left seven cars damaged beyond repair and one person severely injured.

The crushed cars were identification numbers UAG 471B, UAP 462M, UAT 426C, UAR 436D, UAT 606R, 278 UDQ and UAS 101Y.

By press time, two of the nine cars had been towed to Ntinda Police Station.

According to AIP Abdul Iwumbwe the officer in charge of traffic at Ntinda Police Station, the Fuso truck registration number UAG 726C which was coming from Ntinda Trading Centre lost control and rammed into the vehicles heading to Spear-Nakawa Road junction.

 “I think the truck from Ntinda carrying scrap lost its brakes and by the time it approached this junction, it could not stop and instead rammed into these vehicles that were held by traffic,” Iwumbwe said.

According to Iwumbwe, Patrick Okumu 28, a resident of Ntinda was only person injured in the accident.

“Okumu a pedestrian at the time was walking along the road at the time the accident happened but managed to survive,” Iwumbwe confirmed.

Iwumbwe said that investigations into the matter had begun and police is also searching for the driver and the owner of the Fuso truck which caused the accident.
