One person died and 70 others are admitted in Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro district after suspected poisoning at a wedding in Buzaniro village, Nyundo sub-county.

The affected people were at a party in the home of Stanley Rwomushana who was wedding Agnes Ainembabazi, who is also hospitalized following the alleged poisoning on Saturday. They reportedly took porridge at the party.

The Police are considering exhuming the body of a seven-year-old girl, Clare Ayebare who died of the suspected poisoning at the party to help them investigate the matter.

The Kisoro deputy resident district commissioner Gideon Ahebwa confirmed the incident saying investigations were underway to find out if it was poisoning. He said all the people who took porridge at the party complained of stomach ache.

Ahebwa urged the residents to remain calm as the health workers and the Police investigate the matter.

The south-south western regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, said they were holding four people in connection with the matter but declined to reveal their details saying it would jeopardize investigations.

Maate asked the residents to always be extra careful with the people they give responsibilities in parties and other celebrations to avoid such incidents.

The area LC3 chairperson John Nizeyimana said most of those who took the porridge passed watery stool and vomit repeatedly.

The Mutolere hospital acting medical superintendent Justine Kato confirmed they were treating people suspected to have been poisoned at the party, adding that they were doing all they could to save their lives.

He said most of them were responding well to treatment apart from some five who had not yet improved.
