Uganda's young athletes ready for Youth Olympics

Uganda’s young athletes are out to emulate their colleagues at the Commonwealth Games and win medals at the Youth Olympic in Nanjing, China.

  KAMPALA - Uganda’s young athletes are out to emulate their colleagues at the Commonwealth Games and win medals at the Youth Olympic in Nanjing, China.

A contingent of 12 people with UOC treasurer Godfrey Nuwagaba as Chief De Mission, leaves on Monday for the event due August 16-28. Badminton star Shamim Bangi is accompanying the team as the youth ambassador. 

Bangi missed the Commonwealth Games held July 23-August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland. Uganda won one gold medal and four bronze at the Games. The team due in China will compete in athletics, rowing, badminton and table tennis. 

Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president William Blick said on Friday that it is important to have athletes at the Youth Olympics as a first step for the main Olympics in the future. 

The team due in China has athletes — Steven Mande, Geoffrey Balimumiti and Janat Chemusto and badminton player Daniel Mihigo. Rowing has Constance Mbambu while table tennis has Florence Seera.
