Boda-boda riders tipped on First Aid, road safety

Over 50 boda-boda riders have been trained by Uganda Red Cross Society (URSC) on First Aid and road safety

The cylists were awarded certificates as the humanitarian organization celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Mayor’s Gardens in Entebbe.

The boda-boda riders demonstrated professional skills in First Aid during a mock exercise of an accident scene to rescue injured victims and giving them the First Aid before the celebrants.

The relief and disaster preparedness minister, Hillary Onek and MP Stephen Tashoba, the board chairman of the agency presided over the function.

Onek commended the organization for equipping the boda-boda riders with skills on First Aid and road safety.

The Police have often rounded the motorcyclists for breaking traffic regulations and for causing accidents as their number ranks high in health facilities across the country.

The minister was the chief guest of the humanitarian organization celebrations that drew people of different walks of life including the chief of United Nations Support Base Entebbe, Sebastian Laplanche, teachers, nurses, pupils and residents of the area.

The boda-boda riders underwent a one-month training in basic First Aid and road safety.

James Lukyamuzi the boda-boda riders' leader said the training had benefited them a lot and they were going to put in practice what they had learnt.

Onek hailed the humanitarian body for doing government job of disaster and emergency responses especially walk to work demonstration that rocked the city.

“As most of you know Red Cross plays a critical role in supporting government response to disasters around the country,” Onek said.

He urged the organization to engage lawmakers to pass proposed laws such as tax exemption, amending the Red Cross Act to suite the current times and Good Samaritan Law.

He pledged that his ministry will ensure that amendment is expedited and proposed legislation is passed.

Ken Odur, the interim secretary general of Uganda Red Cross, thanked government for the support and conducive environment that enables them to perform the humanitarian activity.

The celebrations held under the theme “50 years of Service Volunteering for Humanity” took place at the Mayors Gardens in Entebbe.

Blood donation and HIV/AIDS testing and counseling were carried out as well as a variety of items were exhibited.

Tashobya, the board chairman said the organization does humanitarian work and development and deserves funding from the government.

He asked government to include the organization in the annual national budgets.
