14 killed in Jinja accident

FOURTEEN people were killed Friday morning when an Isuzu Lorry rammed into an Omni bus along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

FOURTEEN people were killed Friday morning when an Isuzu Lorry rammed into an Omni bus along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

The South Eastern Police Spokesperson Samson Lubega said that according to an eye witnesses, the accident occurred at 10:30am at High ten near Wandago in Mayuge district. The accident scene is 10km from Jinja town.

“Eyewitnesses say a front tyre of an Isuzu lorry registration number UWT 859 burst and its driver lost control and rammed into a taxi registration number UAH 424F killing 14 people on Spot,” Lubega said.

Lubega said the taxi was crashed beyond repair and the front cabin of the Isuzu lorry.

 He said 14 people died on spot and these included seven males, three women and four children. He added that of the seven males, two were riding a bicycle along the Jinja-Iganga highway heading to the Iganga side.

Among the dead was a 7 year old unidentified pupil of Buckley High School who was being taken to school by her parent who also perished.

He said eight people were rushed to Jinja referral hospital in critical condition and these included six males and two women.

Residents gathered at the scene and others had to disembark from their vehicle to help the victims.

According to an eye witness, most of the passengers’ limbs were cut off.

Police evacuated all the bodies to Jinja referral hospital mortuary using its pick up trucks and security vans from Kakira Sugar Limited.

By Press time Police had not yet identified the names of the dead.
