The former chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) Aziz Kasujja is fighting for his life at the Mulago Heart Institute following a heart attack nine days ago.

The outgoing Uganda's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia has not left the intensive care unit since he was admitted last week.

"His condition is serious", Faizal Kasujja, an elder brother to Aziz Kasujja wearily said as a number of family members huddled and spoke in low tones under a tree at Mulago on Tuesday.

Among high profile personalities who have visited him are Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu and Kawempe North MP Latif Sebaggala.

"Right now he is very weak and we are praying he improves a little so that we transfer him abroad. Otherwise he is slipping in and out of come", Faizal Kasujja said.

He noted that the Kasujja family is footing the entire hospital bill and even the mooted transfer of the ailing former EC boss is not premised on financial guarantee from the state.

"We have not heard from government over the issue of hospital bills", Faizal said.

According to the Board chairman of the heart institute, Robert Ssebunya, Kasujja played a central role in enabling Uganda get cardiac catheterization equipment which has equipped the institute with the capacity to carry out closed heart surgery.

Before he was appointed Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Kasujja had a stint as Commissioner at the Stephen Akabwayi headed Electoral Commission.

He was later appointed EC chairman en route to superintending the 2001 general elections cycle.  He left the EC in 2002 with close to three years on his contract still to run.
