President Museveni has hailed the Kiteredde Banakalori brothers in Rakai district for their developmental programs which have transformed the communities in the area.

President Museveni has hailed the Kiteredde Banakalori brothers in Rakai district for their developmental programs which have transformed the communities in the area.
The President was presiding over the Golden Jubilee celebrations for Sacred Heart Kiteredde Secondary School held over the weekend at the school’s grounds in Kyotera.
The institution, which has both Ordinary and Advanced School Certificate levels, was started in 1963 by a religious order known as Bannakaroli Brothers of Kiteredde in Masaka Diocese.
During the colorful ceremony a campaign was also organized to raise rmoney for undertaking the construction of a modern science laboratory that requires over Shs.130 million. Museveni who contributed Shs.50 million towards this drive and auctioned a cow at Shs.10 million supported the idea to turn the institute into a model farming and training centre for the community.
He was responding to a call from the Banakalori Brothers Superior General, Bro Peter Kamya who asked President Museveni to support the institute’s plan to develop it into a model learning centre for modern agriculture and farming skills .
Bro Kamya noted that a lack of logistical facilities and financial support was crippling the initiative of the 50 year old institution whose main projects are animal and crop husbandry.
“I have liked the idea and will ask the relevant government officials to take on the request to turn Banakalori brother institute into a modern training centre for skilling the community,” Museveni said in response.
Museveni advised the Banakalori Brothers to start with simple drip irrigation approach to crops, fruits and coffee.
“Lets use simple drip irrigation methods with used water bottles but for commercial production of maize,beans and ground nuts will require better irrigations approach,” he said.
He called on wananchi to also play their role of getting rid of household poverty through modern commercial agriculture. He reminded them of the 1996 NRM’s manifesto plan on how a family with land holding of at least 4 acres, can eradicate poverty through intensive commercial farming.
“In one acre, you can grow clonal coffee; fruits in the 2nd acre, the 3rd acre food crops and then the 4th acre elephant grass for zero grazing. At the backyard you can have poultry and piggery. With that package, a family can earn over Shs.50 million annually”, he noted.
Museveni said government took a decision to dissolve the NAADS program because the funds which would directly benefit the farmers were being wasted.
