When Joshua Cheptegei shared the Nile Special USPA sports personality of March 2014 with another colleague Winnie Nannyondo, both of them promised to stand on their own next time they win the monthly accolade.

True to their promises, Cheptegei was on Monday unanimously voted Nile Special USPA sports personality of July at the scribes monthly assembly at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

Nannyondo won her own award last June and was crowned shortly before she left for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow promising to clinch another medal to be considered for the annual USPA award.

USPA had shortlisted Cheptegei and fellow athlete Abraham Kiplimo for the award of July but the scribes withdrew the latter considering the former’s achievement at the World Junior championships in Oregon, America.

“When we considered the Cheptegei’s achievement at the World Junior championships, we noticed that, gold medal comes with best of performances compared with a bronze medal. This does not water down a bronze medal though,” USPA president said.

Cheptegei won a gold medal at the competitions while Kiplimo clinched a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Last week, president Yoweri Museveni rewarded Cheptegei a brand new car for the gold medal at the World Junior championships.
