World Junior 10000m champion Joshua Cheptegei has been drafted in the Uganda team to the Africa Senior Championship due in Marrakech, Morrocco next week.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) president Dominic Otuchet said Cheptegei was given a late call up in the Ugandan team of five because of his inspirational form.

Cheptegei reported to camp in Kapchorwa straight away soon after President Yoweri Museveni awarded him a new car and sh20m on Friday.

Though still a junior athlete at 18 years of age, Otuchet believes the Marrakeh meet will give Cheptegei an opportunity to gauge himself against African elite runners.

The four day championship is due August 10-14.

“We decided to include him because of his top form. We believe he can spur the team to better results,” Otuchet said.

Cheptegei who bagged a gold medal in the IAAF World junior Championships in Oregon, USA recently will compete for honours in the 10000m and 5000m.
