The World Bank is satisfi ed about the way the Second Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF2) is faring so far and has described it as one of the successful projects it is funding in Uganda.

The World Bank mission during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary in the offi ce of the Prime Minister, Pius Bigirimana said they were optimistic that the NUSAFII is being effectively implemented.

So what are the factors behind the success of the second phase of the program unlike the fi rst phase project that was largely dogged by corruption?

NUSAFII is a government project being fi nanced by a Specifi c Investment Loan of U$100m from The World Bank and 24 million pounds grant provided by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). Read more

NUSAF 2 REGISTERS MORE SUCCESSES IN NORTHERN UGANDA

THE fi ve-year NUSAF 2, a successor program to NUSAF I, has recorded tremendous successes in its bid to fast-track the social-economic transformation of northern Uganda, after decades-long insecurity orchestrated by Joseph Kony and his LRA rebel outfit.

Hon. Amuge Otengo, the State Minister for Northern Uganda, notes that the region has taken great strides in its recovery path, with hope restored amongst its productive population that was ‘herded’ in the Internally Displaced People’s camps (IDPs). Read more

SOME OF THE BENEFICIARIES FROM GULU DISTRICT TESTIFY ABOUT GAINS REAPED FROM NUSAF 2

Today Florence Apio has fi ve goats. Four of them are expectant and they will be giving birth soon. Life has not been easy for Apio since she returned from the Internally Displaced Peoples’ (IDP) Camp a few years ago.

After returning from the camp, Apio tried her hand at farming but her efforts didn’t pay off. Apio then joined a savings group in Wii-aworanga in Layibi Division in Gulu hoping that she would be given a loan so tthat she can start a business but failed since her savings were meager. Read more

NUSAF II TESTIMONIES FROM AMURU AND NWOYA DISTRICTS

Several sub projects have been generated by benefi ciaries in Amuru and Nwoya districts but implementation delayed. The Amuru town council NUSAFII focal person, Kenneth Lam said 34 sub projects have been generated and approved by the district technical planning committee.

The projects include piggery, cattle and goat rearing, bore hole drilling, construction of teachers’ houses, staff houses at various health centers and construction of community agricultural produce storage facilities. Read more

SALON BUSINESS BOOSTED BY NUSAF

Grace Ageno readily smiles when I ask for a picture of her weaving hair of a customer. “You ask her,” she quips, shifting the burden to her client who joins in with a soft laugh.

However, not even the small distraction of taking their picture disturbs the twisting and rapid movements of her fi ngers as she goes about her duty.

In the opposite corner of the partly glassed-wall is Ojara peering with intensity at a laptop screen where he prepares to burn several songs selected by his equally youthful client. This was after just shaving hair off the heads of two male customers a while back since I entered the salon. Read more
