Team Uganda at the Commonwealth Games will not leave Glasgow until Wednesday after failing to get an earlier flight out of Scotland.

The entire team will be flying out of Glasgow on Wednesday via Dubai and will be expected to spend a night in Dubai before flying out early morning to Entebbe.

Team Uganda is leaving Glasgow with one gold medal courtesy of Moses Kipsiro in the 10000m and three bronze medal from athlete Winnie Nanyondo and boxers Juma Kaggwa and Mike Ssekabembe.

Ssekabembe was stopped from boxing in the semi-final after the medical team declared that he had injured his arm.

“It has been a successful outing we can say but we need to work harder. This will mean reviewing all our plans and our targets. We will be meeting sports federations on an individual basis and see what we can do to help them help themselves before government can come in,” said state minister Charles Bakkabulindi, who paid a courtesy call to the team before flying out of Glasgow.

“We have to work harder mostly on the technical ground. We want to see that more coaches are trained as they are the basis of improved performance,” he added.

All the two coaches from the boxing side did not meet the required standard, leaving Uganda to get help from neighbours Kenya or Nigeria to second their boxers.

He said that through their partnership with the Germany government, a number of sports have benefited from having their coaches trained, though many have not come back to pass on the skills.

He also called for programmes to start preparing for Rio 2016, saying that Germany started preparation three years back.

“Let us use the little resources we have. The government will come on board later but if we wait for the government, then we will not have people at the Olympics as there are qualifiers required.”
